Flooding Forces Closure of US 54 Bridge; Quincy Memorial Bridge Open

QUINCY – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has closed the US 54 Bridge into Louisiana, Missouri due to rising flood levels. Traffic is being rerouted to IL-96 northbound to I-72 westbound into Hannibal, Missouri.

The Memorial Bridge in Quincy is currently open, however IDOT crews are on standby to close the structure if forecasts show rising river levels in the area.

Severe storms throughout Illinois caused flooding in communities along the Mississippi River and forecasts show additional rainfall into next week in some areas, including Quincy. IDOT crews are closely monitoring the situation and closing flooded roads as necessary to ensure the safety of the motoring public.

IDOT officials warn motorists that driving into flooded areas can be dangerous and suggest the following safety tips:

  • Do not drive through flooded areas
  • If a road covered by water seems shallow enough to cross, do not attempt to do so
  • If your car stalls, do not attempt to push it out; seek higher ground
