Permits are issued for all loads that exceed the current legal limits specified by state law. The permit process ensures that inter and intra state commerce needs are considered while ensuring the protection of the state's infrastructure, the efficient flow of traffic and the safety of the motoring public. Highway Permits are required when working within the right-of-way of an Interstate, U.S. state route, Illinois state route, or state maintained roadway. IDOT allows the placement of special signs that provide motorists with business identification and directional information for eligible motorist services, attractions, and tourist-oriented businesses as well as signs intended to raise public awareness of impaired driving and allow families an opportunity to remember the victims of crashes involving impaired drivers.
