Illinois is home to the nation’s third largest interstate system with motorists traveling more than 105 billion vehicle miles annually on the state's 146,000 roadway miles. As a result, the department recognizes the importance of maintaining and improving this vast transportation network to enhance safety, mobility, and economic competitiveness while meeting the emerging transportation needs of the 21st century.

Transportation is about people and its impact on day-to-day lives. It is about how we get to work, business meetings, and even vacation destinations with friends and families. It is about how we run errands and visit friends and family. Whatever the travel purpose, IDOT wants to continue to make the Illinois travel experience safe, smooth, and seamless. IDOT actively provides information on travel conditions, road closures, rest areas, scenic byways, and work zone safety.  We even help motorists when stranded on interstate roads and highways by deploying our Emergency Patrol Vehicles. IDOT is here to make your travelling experience effortless for you and your family.
