Illinois’ Inland water transportation services, including rivers and canals, represent an important, alternative and sustainable mode of transportation. Water transportation transports goods and people from one place to another seamlessly as it stimulates the regional economy through attraction of new industries, jobs and economic opportunities. IDOT owns and operates two vehicle ferries that cross the Illinois River, while supporting the development and intermodal connectivity of Illinois' transportation system.
