US 67 Expressway and Illinois River Bridge

In 1989, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) conducted a study to identify areas in the state that were losing opportunities for economic development because of inadequate highway facilities. This study, titled Lifelines to the Economy, designated US Route 67 between Alton and the Quad Cities as a “Major Economic Arterial”, defined as a federal and state route serving cities that were not directly connected by an interstate highway system. IDOT initiated corridor feasibility studies for segments of US 67 between Alton and the Quad Cities in 1990.
