55th Street from Wolf Road to Brainard Avenue

This project was included in the Joliet Road Feasibility Study, which recommended several roadway improvements to mitigate the traffic impacts from the closure of Joliet Road. The Illinois Department of Transportation (Department) completed a preliminary engineering and environmental study (Phase I) in September 2017. Contract plan preparation and land acquisition (Phase II) is anticipated to be initiated in FY 2019, which begins July 1, 2018.   Construction (Phase III) is included in the Department’s FY 2019-2024 Proposed Highway Improvement Program.   Current engineering efforts are targeted to enable a contract letting in the middle years of the multi-year program contingent upon plan readiness, land acquisition, and funding availability through future annual legislative appropriations.  The general scope of work for this improvement is anticipated to consist of widening and resurfacing 55th Street to provide a continuous flush median, adding a southbound right turn lane on Willow Springs Road, traffic signal replacement, pedestrian and bicyclist accommodations, and drainage improvements.

Note: IDOT projects typically have three distinct phases. Phase I (or the project Study) consists of developing the project scope, environmental studies and preliminary design of a project. Phase II (Design) consists of refining the design to develop contract plans and land acquisition. Phase III (Construction) consists of the actual construction of the project.
