US 20 at Marengo Road / Beck Road and Union Road

The Illinois Department of Transportation (Department) has completed preliminary engineering and environmental studies (Phase I) for the improvement of US 20 at Marengo Road/ Beck Road/ and Union Road in unincorporated Coral Township in McHenry County. The proposed improvement is anticipated to consist of the construction of a five-leg, modern roundabout. The improvement is expected to enhance safety and improve traffic operations at the intersection. This improvement is included in the Department’s current Proposed Highway Improvement Program, utilizing funding through the federal Highway Safety Improvement program. A Public Hearing was held on October 28, 2015 to present the preferred alternative and to obtain public input. Following is the preferred alternative: 

IDOT projects typically have three distinct phases. Phase I (or the project Study) consists of developing the project scope, environmental studies and preliminary design of a project. Phase II (Design) consists of refining the design to develop contract plans, and land acquisition. Phase III (Construction) consists of the actual construction of the project.

The project is currently in Phase II of the project development process which involves land acquisition and the development of detailed construction documents for the public bid process. Our current engineering efforts are targeted to enable a contract letting in the early years of our current multi-year program contingent upon plan readiness, land acquisition, and funding availability through our future annual legislative appropriations.
